Nellie Escalante is a NYC born and raised artist, art historian, museum educator, author, blogger, and creative entrepreneur.
An experienced museum educator, Nellie has taught at El Museo del Barrio and the Museum of the Moving Image. She is currently a member of the teaching team at the Studio Museum in Harlem, Arts & Minds and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She holds an MA in Anthropology and a BA in Art History with a minor in Latin American Studies. She has previously published essays and articles in museum catalogs and online publications, particularly about Puerto Rican art and artists. Nellie’s perspective as an artist and special-needs mother informs her work as a museum educator.
As a creative entrepreneur, Nellie’s Etsy shop, NELARTE, features DIY sewing tutorials inspired by her love of clothing reconstruction, as well as t-shirts celebrating cultural heroes, art, and natural hair.
Nellie lives with her husband and two boys. You can find her blogging about art history, the artist life, refashion, faith, and special-needs mothering at Nelarte.com. Nellie is also the published author of “Peek a Boo: I See Me: 35 Lessons in Self/Soul Care for the Special-Needs Mom” and “Girl Reconstructed: Crafting a Creative Business as a Special-Needs Mom“, both of which can be purchased on Amazon.
