Erika Alicea is the homeschooling mama of one amazing girl, affectionately known as Izzy. They reside in the Bronx, a borough in New York City, along with her husband, Efrain, who’s the pastor of Elements Church, and their adorable pup, Maggie.

When Erika first began homeschooling, she was in desperate need of peace in her homeschool. The Lord answered her prayers when she was introduced to Charlotte Mason through God-sent friends.

However, Erika’s heart as a former public school teacher has always leaned toward a multicultural education for children through the use of diverse, living books. As a result, she battled with seemingly monocultural approaches to implementing Miss Mason’s philosophy. With the help of her amazing co-hosts at Charlotte Mason for All Podcast who are walking this journey with her, Erika was able to push through and understand Miss Mason’s methods are transferable to any family dynamic, regardless of ethnicity, socioeconomic status or zip code.  This includes Art Appreciation.

As Erika continues to learn about all the beauty a Charlotte Mason Education offers, she’s been creative in implementing Miss Mason’s philosophy in the context of city life and as a family of color. Her prayer is that her website Charlotte Mason City Living can be a resource to help parents diversify their instruction and serve as an encouragement to all, especially those who may feel Miss Mason’s philosophy isn’t inclusive enough or even possible for multicultural and urban families.

On any given day, you can find Erika taking pictures of nature treasures nestled in the city that often go unnoticed in the liveliness of urban life.  For years, Erika has dreamed of becoming a published author of children’s literature.  Writing the biographies for these Artist Studies have been a joy for Erika…and is one step closer to fulfilling that dream.
